“The Same Sky” by Andrea Green on Tuneful Tuesdays

Today’s “Tuneful Tuesday” song comes from composer Andrea Green who writes children’s musicals that teach tolerance, diversity and inclusion. THE SAME SKY is a story about diverse fabrics that come to life in a fabric shop called Fabric Fantasia. One day, Polyester Louie and Lace meet and become friends but this is not acceptable to Lady Tattersol, the mean bully seamstress who runs the shop and divides the fabrics on separate shelves.

It is only when the shop is threatened of being closed down that the fabrics learn how to stand up for themselves and come together to create something extraordinary. The fabrics save Fabric Fantasia and along the way, save themselves.

THE SAME SKY is a song reflecting the need for inclusion, communication, understanding and awareness of our shared humanity. The melody is simple and can include instrumental improvisation.

Let’s take a listen to the song:

THE SAME SKY

music and lyrics by Andrea Green

As far back as I can remember

I was told I should stay to myself

Looking around there are friends to be found

But I have to stay on the shelf.

We all live under the same sky.

The same sky

The same sky

We all live under the same sky.

But we just can’t live together.

Next to me there are fabrics I don’t know.

I was told they are not the same as me.

Why do we have to be just the same.

Why can’t we be who we are?

We all live under the same sky.

The same sky

The same sky

We all live under the same sky.

But we just can’t live together.

Tattersol’s in the way

Keeping us far apart.

Tattersol’s in the way.

Where is her heart.

As far back as I can remember

I was told I should stay to myself

Looking around there are friends to be found

But I have to stay on the shelf.

We all live under the same sky.

The same sky

The same sky

We all live under the same sky.

But we just can’t live together.

But we just can’t live…

But we just can’t live together.

AND …WE…. CAN ….LIVE ….TOGETHER!!

For choreography, Andrea suggests the children be positioned in a unified circle where they can sing and use diverse strips of fabrics such as cotton, lace, wool, velvet, chiffon, polyester, satin, spandex, etc as props. During the song, they can take turns individually moving and singing with the fabric pieces or playing instruments.

She also suggests ending the song with..”and we can live together”  in the key of C……F-G-A-B -C-C since that is how the musical ends. Furthermore, the idea that “we can live together” is her sincerest hope for the world.

A great group art project to reinforce the message of the song would be to have the children create a collage of different fabrics of all textures and colors. This collage could be used as a backdrop during the performance. Let’s see what the children have to say about THE SAME SKY! Watch the video below.

  1. Beautiful song-lots of teaching possibilities:)

  2. I LOVE THIS SONG! The chorus is perfect for my cool-down time for preschool-aged children, when I always try to do some sort of caring/kindness theme in my classes. And I can even imagine expanding that as the kids come up with other things that are the “same” or “different” about each other–maybe “we can all sing the same song”, for example. I can’t wait to see where this leads us!

    1. So glad that you liked it!
