“The Song That Doesn’t End” by Shari Lewis on Throwback Thursdays

Today’s song is the super fun and never-ending “The Song That Doesn’t End” performed by Shari Lewis!

When I was a kid, I looked forward to mornings when I could watch Lambchop’s Play-Along and listen to ventriloquist Shari Lewis sing my absolute favorite song “The Song That Never Ends”! In the 1950’s, Shari Lewis became a beloved trailblazer in the children’s entertainment industry as she starred in a host of children’s shows including: Facts N’Fun, Kartoon Klub, Shariland, Hi Mom and The Shari Lewis Show. In 1992, her award-winning show Lamb Chop’s Play-Along aired on PBS and lasted for 5 years! At the end of each show, she would close by performing “The Song the Doesn’t End” alongside characters on the show. With music and lyrics by Norman Martin, this song was literally never-ending… unless you changed the channel! (Smiles)

Shari Lewis and her cast of characters made this song so much fun to sing aloud with my school friends. While on bus rides, singing became a friendly competition of not only who could sing the loudest; but who could sing the song the for the longest. If there was a reluctant classmate resisting the urge to join in on the fun,  “The Song That Doesn’t End” became a non-violent weapon of mass annoyance to the listener! Priceless childhood memories, I tell you!

The lyrics and melody are simplistic and masterful in that its repetition encourages audience participation and creates a culture of glee! Just be forewarned: This song will definitely stay with you long after you stop singing it. It’s a contagiously musical gift that keeps on giving! Thank you Norman Martin for creating this timeless masterpiece; and to Shari Lewis for paving the way for children’s music artists!

“The Song That Doesn’t End”

Music and Lyrics  by Norman Martin

“This is the song that doesn’t end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because

This is the song that doesn’t end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because

This is the song that doesn’t end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because

This is the song that doesn’t end

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because

Yes, it goes on and on my friend

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because

This is the song that doesn’t end…”

  1. AH…you brought back a lot of happy memories for me! I watched Sheri when I was a little girl and my daughter watched Lamb Chop’s Play-Along. We had the extreme honor of meeting Sheri backstage at a concert and it was unforgettable.
    Thank you for posting this!

    1. Wow Judy! What an honor to have met Sheri!!!!! Thanks for sharing!

  2. You’ve got me laughing this morning! What a fun show—I never saw it when I was young, so this was not annoying, but I could see how it could grow to be….it reminds me of a camp song we used to sing while waiting to go in the dining hall: “Here we sit like birds in the wilderness, birds in the wilderness, birds in the wilderness. Here we sit like birds in the wilderness, waiting to be fed…Waiting to be fed, waiting to be fed. Here we sit like birds in the wilderness waiting to be fed….” etc. And it goes on and on and on…

    1. Hi Dorothy! I’m so glad that you liked it! Thanks for sharing the other song! Hooray!
