Nature’s Outside Your Door by Bay Song on Tuneful Tuesday

Today’s tune is from new members Jo-Anne and John Keenan of Keenan Literacy. It is from their new album, Spaceship Earth: Caring for our Planet.

We live near the shore of Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. From our house, we hear wind and waves, the song of the bay. This is why we call our musical group Bay Song.

A few years ago, we began writing a nature curriculum for children’s summer programs. Today, it is used in over 20 locations in Massachusetts. We integrate literacy, music and art into this curriculum. They are never just add-ons. Another key component is getting kids to go outside and experience nature first hand.

As a result of our curriculum work, we began writing environmental songs. We include specific curriculum content in many of these songs. There are songs about habitats, butterflies, the web of life, the seasons, the oceans, biodiversity, a watershed, and other natural things. There is also a song about Earth Day. Our album of environmental songs is called Spaceship Earth: Caring for Our Planet.

One of the songs reminds children that nature is all around us, no matter where we live. The song is an eight-bar blues based on a traditional chord progression. You can also add a turnaround in the style of Robert Johnson.

Nature’s Outside Your Door

1. No matter where you live

there’s nature all around

plants, trees, and animals

bugs and birds abound

Take a close look

You’ll find so much more

Nature’s outside your door

2. There’s a lot going on

if you look at the ground

Insects, seeds, and slugs

Leaves have fallen down

Take a close look

You’ll find so much more

Nature’s outside your door

3. If you live in the city

there’s squirrels, plants, and trees

A crack in the sidewalk

can hold life for you to see

Take a close look

You’ll find so much more

Nature’s outside your door
