A few years ago we were booked to play a show on Mother’s Day. To prepare for the gig I searched songbooks and the internet for tunes about Mamas, but didn’t find material that I thought would work with the kind of show I like to present.

So I wrote this little song.

The song was written for my own mother and also for Mother Earth. Like Shel Silverstein’s story of “The Giving Tree,” our mothers feed us, help us grow, and continue to give throughout our lives.

“Happy Mother’s Day” is somewhat of a chant and is superfun to sing with audiences at shows. I love singing the harmonies and all of the the long “O” rhymes. I deeply love reggae rhythms, so we decided to record this Jamaican-inspired version for the album “Apple Apple.

Happy Mother’s Day to Moms everywhere!

Happy Mother’s Day

Gm – D7
Mother I love you
I love you so
Mother I love you
I love you so
I love you like the wind blows
I love you so
I love you like a red rose
I love you so

Gm – D7 – Cm – Eb
How could I ever repay
D7 – Eb – D7
All the gifts you gave?
Gm – D7 – Cm – Eb
The only way is simply to say
D7
Happy Mother’s Day

Mother I love you
I love you so
Mother I love you
I love you so
You gave me breath and bone
I love you so
You walk with me as I grow
I love you so
You hold me in your rainbow
I love you so
And carry me back home
I love you so

How could I ever repay
All the gifts you gave?
The only way is simply to say
Happy Mother’s Day
