The Jewish Holiday of Hanukkah begins tonight! Member Ellen Allard contributed this song about hero Judah Maccabee.

Hanukkah is a minor holiday on the Jewish calendar. But when it comes to how children view Hanukkah, it is a major holiday! Full of fun and excitement, Hanukkah provides Jewish families with 8 nights to celebrate. Candles are lit every night, presents are exchanged, latkes (potato pancakes, pronounced lot-keys or lot-cuz) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts, pronounced soof-gan-ee-ote) are devoured. We read the story of Judah Maccabee, the hero of Hanukkah. He and the Maccabee soldiers found enough oil (in the temple that had been destroyed) to provide 8 nights of light, thus we celebrate Hanukkah for 8 nights.

JUDAH MACCABEE, THE HAMMER

Judah, Judah, Judah Maccabee………

Son of Mattathias, a brave man, they called him Judah Maccabee
He led the Jews in their freedom fight, battles fought in the day & night
A hero for you and me. CHORUS

The Jewish people worshiped one God, and they celebrated all their holy days
Then the king commanded them, no more, my idols you will bow before
The end is near if you do not obey singing… CHORUS

Fearful the Jews refused to fight, they gave in to the Greeks instead
But Judah said “We cannot wait, the time is now, don’t hesitate, come follow me”
And so the Maccabees he led, he was… CHORUS

Antiochus sent his army to, to, to capture all the Maccabees
Three long years, the Jews fought back, they survived the attacks
They live on in our memories… CHORUS
