I’m Gonna Clap My Hands in the Morning by Stuart Stotts

Our keynote speaker this year was member Stuart Stotts. Stuart has sung with and performed for kids and families in schools, libraries, and community settings around the world since 1984. Stuart is a Kennedy Center teaching artist and a frequent presenter at educational events, keynoting conferences and leading workshops for early childhood and elementary school teachers, librarians, and social service professionals around the country. He opened his speech with this lovely, invigorating song.

I was walking into an early childhood center this past summer and a new song showed up. I was literally writing it as I was setting up. I played it and kids got it and liked it right away.

It’s a useful song.

I’m gonna clap my hands in the morning.
I’m gonna clap my hands.
I’m gonna clap my hands in the morning.
I’m gonna clap my hands.
Clap ’em up high, clap ’em down low.
Clap ’em real fast, clap ’em real slow.
I’m gonna clap my hands in the morning.
I’m gonna clap my hands.

It’s a zipper song, so you can substitute
“Stomp my feet” or “Blink my eyes” or “hug my friend” or “dance around” or any number of other ideas. It has been a good song to start a singing session because it’s very easy to participate with. And it’s just fun.

In another school, one child suggested “Wake Up.” It was a great idea until we got to the B part, at which point the whole staff broke into laughter.

I also opened my CMN keynote with this. A lively way to start with all those wonderful singers and friends.

  1. Great song Stuart, it was sure fun singing it at your keynote! This kind of song is so accessible and the kids and teachers pick it right up! That’s my kind of song. 🙂

I have a “Clap Your Hands Now” song. It’s using a traditional melody “Pick a Bale of Cotton”. I also like to zip in shake your eggs or tap your sticks etc. Could do that with yours too. Patricia Shih made a video of the song for me. Take a look and listen when you get a chance.
