Plant a Tree by Earth Mama on Tuneful Tuesday

April 22nd is Earth Day. Since 1970 Earth Day has been a day here in the U.S. used to celebrate and bring awareness to the need for preserving and protecting our wonderful planet. Our member Joyce Rouse, aka Earth Mama, has devoted herself to teaching and advocating for action against climate change and making our world a greener place. We’ll be doing two Tuneful Tuesdays this month, courtesy of Joyce, highlight two of her many songs meant to educate children about the need for sustainable practices.

You and I are part of a complex Web of Life. Trees are vital to that web. Planting a tree is something that almost anyone can do with a little help. This call and response song names a few of the many species that depend on trees. I recently sang this with students at the Baltimore Lab School, where they will help plant 350 trees in their neighborhood this year. Way to go! Do a squirrel a favor. Make a bird happy.  Plant a Tree!

Plant A Tree by Joyce Johnson Rouse

If you want to make a bird happy plant a tree, plant a tree,

If you want to make a bird happy plant a tree, plant a tree,

If you want to make a bird happy, singing bright and snappy,

If you want to make a bird happy plant a tree, plant a tree.

If you want to do a squirrel a favor , plant a tree….

…………. grow acorns he can savor….

If you want to help the bees make honey plant a tree…

………on a day that’s sweet and sunny…

If you want to build a home for the critters, plant a tree…

……….so they won’t get the shivers….

If you want to make the air a little cleaner, plant a

tree…………..and the earth a little greener……

  1. This is a great example of the “folk process” and a “zipper song”, where an old tune is revised and revitalized to make something new and fresh and relevant, and where everyone can “zip in” their own ideas for lyrics. Yay Joyce!
