Harvey the Turkey by Patricia Shih on Tuneful Tuesday

Today’s Tuneful Tuesday is from member Patricia Shih, and just in time for Thanksgiving! In it, she tells the story of Harvey the Turkey, and his adventures at the White House.

I wanted to write a silly Thanksgiving poem that was ostensibly about a fortunate turkey but (as what sometimes happens when I write) it morphed into something else in its deeper meaning.  I posted the poem on the list serve long ago and I think it was Sol Weber who pointed out that it scanned like the tune “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, and so a song was born.

Interestingly enough, when I was searching for images to use in the music video for it I came across a real turkey farm, who gave me permission to use their photographs.  Maybe it’s because the doesn’t really take a stance on either side of the issue (farming animals for food, vegetarianism, etc.) but instead poses questions and leaves the answers to the listener.  I also got permission from a turkey hunter to use an image of his, again for the same reason.
