Partner Spotlight: Growing Sound

The Children’s Music Network is honored and grateful for the support of our wonderful Business Sponsors and Non-Profit Partners. This series is meant to shed a little more light on what they do.

1. What is your mission?

We are a multi-award winning children’s music publisher that develops music CDs and other Resources that translate key findings from recent child development research into practical and entertaining products for teachers, parents and children. Growing Sound songs focus on topics such as optimism, resilience, self-control, mindfulness, motivation, acceptance, empathy, responsibility and more. Kids love our songs because they are interactive and fun. Parents love Growing Sound songs because they help teach children key skills that make them “ready for school” and “ready for life”. Teachers love our music because it helps them implement social and emotional concepts that are part of classroom curriculum. GROWING SOUND is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social enterprise division of Children, Inc. based in Covington, KY . Children, Inc. provides early childhood education, strengthening family resources, service learning and other family related services for financially challenged families in the Greater Cincinnati area. We are a small staff of 3 including a Creative Director (David Kisor-CMN member), Research Director (Tom Lottman) and Sales & Marketing Director (Alyson Bleistine-CMN Member). Demi Mays (CMN Member) is also part of our team as a label artist.

2. How do you apply it practically?

GROWING SOUND offers 16 music CDs, 8 Resource Manuals, 2 DVDs and 3 Curriculum Kits. In addition to our products, GROWING SOUND travels the country offering teacher trainings, parent workshops, family concerts, school assemblies, library concerts and more. Since 2007, we have trained over 65,000 teachers how to use our songs in their classrooms each day. Today over 2M children sing our songs worldwide!

3. Why did you choose to partner with CMN?

Recently, Growing Sound has been receiving requests from other children’s music artists, and teachers who are interested in licensing our songs for use on their own projects, or for use in the classroom (or at other training events). As a small non-profit we understand the challenges artists/teachers face. Many are wonderful performers, but not necessarily songwriters. We can help with that. Others might be great songwriters with songs that fit our mission for future projects we may create. We see CMN as a great community to explore these partnership opportunities in greater detail. We also think (since we are both a publisher and a record label) that we might be able to offer insight for artists looking to take their music experiences to a new level. In 2015, we will (for the first time ever) offer other artists the opportunity to record their new projects with us at our studio in Covington, KY. This will include A&R for song selection, opportunities to work with an award-winning songwriter, top-notch studio production with professional studio musicians, help with packaging design, pr, distribution and more. This opportunity will be available for the artist who just wants to record one song, or for the artist interested in recording an entire project.

4. What song from your own childhood do you still sing regularly?

We posed this question to DEMI MAYS (CMN Member) and newest artist to the Growing Sound family. Demi is just a young 20 something so her childhood isn’t that long ago (compared to the rest of us on staff). Demi’s favorite childhood song is ‘Tomorrow’ from the musical “Annie”. Demi appeared in the lead role in this production when she was in junior high and she believes it truly set her on her course not only as a performer for children, but to live her life full of hope and optimism.

Demi’s new CD: DANDELION was just released in September and has already garnered 3 awards (Family Review Center Gold Award, Mom’s Choice GOLD Award, NAPPA Honors Award). You can preview DANDELION here.

5. What is your official dance move?

LOL! You must have a camera hidden in our office somewhere. We all agree that our favorite dance move is really FREE DANCE. GROWING SOUND is all about self-expression. Self-Expression leads to positive social and emotional development. As a matter of fact, we have a song called “The Whole World’s Watching” on our CD titled “Everyone Is Someone”. We took the traditional poem “Dance like no one is watching” and sort of flipped it on its head. Check out our music video here.
